MATEUSZ SADOWSKI
EXCITABILITY 2009-11-27 - 2010-01-10
Excitability, by definition, is the ability to respond to stimuli that are most commonly associated with the terms of the external environment. Mateusz Sadowski approaches the problem of excitability in a rather specific manner. The process begins with exploring the topic on a very personal ground. The final result is, however, a combination of photographs and video, which creates the impression of cool, neutral, simple records of research. In fact, it appears that both intimacy and formally structured objectivity, are the only elements that create a situation which seems to be some kind of a trap for the viewer.
However, the actual study of “excitability” is conducted on the observers. It engages them in a game in which particular works provoke them to create their own, internal environment. The images, which Sadowski creates, are supposed to serve as well-designed traps which leave the “caught viewers” enriched in experience. However, it is the sensual feeling rather than intellectual penetrating, which is important.
Sadowski’s work is focused on common issues raised in the contemporary culture: the image of nature created by modern man, his/her relationship to nature, the impossible dialogue between the wild and the civilized, corporeality, sexuality. Being rather a primordial image of the concept, eroticism is not endowed with culturally established canons. These issues, however, are presented to the viewer as hints. They are born underneath the skin, before one can even think of them.
Ultimately, the aim of Mateusz Sadowski’s work is to become a viewer’s reflection. The image of nature is just a tool used to create a sensual feeling, not in general terms though, but in terms of the human nature. Despite the strong autobiographic references, the viewer feels that the film is about him/her.
